What to Do When a Windshield Crack Spreads While Driving

A windshield crack can spread while driving because of road vibration, temperature changes, or stress near the edge of the glass. If it begins growing, stay calm, reduce speed gradually, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.
Pull over in a safe location if the crack interferes with your view, reaches across a large part of the windshield, or appears to affect the glass near the driver. Do not press on the crack, slam the doors, or direct extreme heat or cold toward the damaged area.
Once safely parked, photograph the damage and contact an auto glass professional. Describe the crack's location, length, and whether it reaches an edge. If the vehicle is not safe to drive, mobile windshield service can bring an inspection or replacement to your location.
